🎶✨ Meet - Roy Zhang! ✨🎶
Say hello to Roy — one of our three outstanding finalists in this year’s Dunedin Concerto Competition! We asked Roy a few questions about his musical world, the competition, and what keeps him grounded. Here’s what he had to say:
🎹 What inspired you to learn your instrument?“I started at the age of 4, so I was too young to remember exactly — but it was thanks to my mum for getting me started.”
🎶 Favourite composers & pieces?“Rachmaninoff is a favourite, and I also really love Scriabin.”
🌍 Dream collaboration?“It would be a dream to perform a concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic.”
🎼 How do you feel about being a finalist?“I’m really honoured and excited, especially getting to perform with an orchestra.”
🎵 What will you be performing?“I’m performing the first two movements of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major. The first movement is full of energy and fun, while the second movement is incredibly beautiful and emotional.”
✨ Favourite moment in your piece?“If I had to choose — probably the beginning of the second movement.”
🎉 When you’re not at the piano?“I enjoy spending time with friends.”
🎹 If your piano had a personality?“Versatile and flexible, maybe.”
🎭 Pre-performance ritual?“I take a few deep breaths and always make sure my hands are warm.”
👏 We can’t wait to watch Roy bring Ravel’s concerto to life on stage! 🎶
